The chair’s posture is proud, monolithic, and commanding.
Description
Mahogany wood and leather chair that explores emotion through form and material.
Overview
Chairs are among the most prolific pieces of furniture on record. Everyone, no matter the time period, enjoyed a good sit every now and then. All a chair essentially needs to do is support one’s weight in a seated position; the rest is up to creator interpretation.
This project was a study on how we could explore emotion and purpose simply through the chair’s form. I wanted to explore a geometric direction, focusing on clean lines and hard edges. This form language led to words such as austere, insistent, regal, and refined.
The elegance of the mahogany corroborated the language initiated by the form. The wood remained naturally expressive despite the simple and pure geometry that contained it. The seat is made of leather and cotton batting, providing some comfort to an otherwise unyielding stance. The chair made the sitter part of its form language, transforming even a slouch into a stringent royal with excellent posture.
The solid board of mahogany adds both visual and physical strength.
The minimal padding coincides with the simplicity of the tube support structure.
The hole lightens the visual weight and serves as a means for moving the chair.
