Net Stick spring 2006

2008

This concept was inspired by modern top-tier fishing reels.

Description

Collapsible fishing net that is resilient, easy to use, and aesthetically pleasing.

Overview

Most collapsible fishing nets are awkward both physically and aesthetically. Some are costly; yet prove to be cheap and disposable. Most function poorly, and are susceptible to tangles and breakage while in use.

Our goal was to design a more functional net with consumer appeal. The project began with the creation and evolution of the collapsing mechanism. Many prototypes were used to explore that function specifically. The final prototype uses a worm gear apparatus requiring the push of a button and pressure against a surface to lock the net in the open position.

The prototype was built and patented in the early 90s. We re-styled the net-stick, focusing on aesthetic details and function refinement. We began this phase with market research, establishing its competition and setting landmarks. We also focused on getting the net ready for manufacturing by studying materials and assembly methods. We took the data and created unique concepts, setting it apart from its competitors.

Many systems of net management were explored through concept sessions.

Sporting goods were examined to establish current and appropriate aesthetic trends.

A functional, patented prototype was built upon this early rendering.
