Description

Maple and walnut wood table designed for laptops and accessories.

Overview

Form often follows function. The practical need of having a horizontal surface for placing items has been addressed in many ways. In the case of the table, versatility reigns supreme.

The key problem I needed to address in my living area was a lack of space for my laptop computer. I decided to design and construct a modern table that would serve primarily as a workstation, yet would still provide adaptable storage space. The table needed to be ergonomic, simple, and attractive.

My initial sketches focused on strong geometric distinctions between the horizontal and vertical surfaces. I decided to depict this variance with the contrasting tones of maple and walnut. Digitally modeling the table gave me insight on how it should go together and how the final materials would look. Based on those findings, I created a MDF mockup as a proof of concept. This model refined the joinery, dimensions, and form elements that would become the final table.

Asymmetry is a consistent theme throughout both form and functionality.

The table incorporates mortise and tenon, tongue and dado, rabbet, and butt joints.

The shelf under the main table surface has three separate storage compartments.
