Coin Box fall 2003

2008

The box is a cognitive reminder of how much change I’ve acquired.

Description

Mahogany wood vessel made to contain and organize loose change.

Overview

Spare change seems to find its way into the strangest of places. Everyone has found coins in couch cushions, washing machines, and under furniture. My change seemed to pile on my dresser, only to end up on the floor once the stack grew too unstable. This project was an opportunity to get my change in order.

Very few people actually like change, but money is money and it does add up. There had to be a simple and quick way to organize my mass of coins. I decided to create a practical, yet decorative box to accomplish this. I didn’t want the vessel to shout its function, but rather privately accommodate my needs.

The box needed to be attractive to encourage its display, so I constructed the box from a board of beautiful mahogany. I decided to attach the top with soss hinges, which added charm to its daily function. The change is held in slots machined to fit each respective coin. When closed, the box is subtle and harmonious. When opened, it speaks pure function.

The faces of the box are comprised of a continuous board of mahogany.

Once full, the slots also serve as coin-wrapping assistants.

The coin slot drawer features a hidden compartment for wrapper storage.
